People ought to mind their own business." Before he could answer she was pushing his chair toward the door of the shack and he was silent with inner amusement at her boldness. He was almost invariably annoyed by loquacious servants and certainly this one had said nothing extraordinary, yet the plaintive cajolery in her voice gave vague other meanings to her words. She was certainly a petty thief for she said, pushing his chair through the door, "If you weren't right here, see, you might think I took that brandy over there but being as you're right here you can see the bottle's almost empty anyway. And don't you worry about leaving your wallet around because I never take money from anybody. I never take anything that ain't freely offered, especially from a gentleman, because my husband wouldn't let me."

There was nothing to explain about tidying the room, nothing more than the usual admonitions about leaving papers as they were and taking care of breakables. Mrs. Bender, in fact, did not appear to listen as he began to tell her, but seated herself on a leather hassock before him, her soft opaque eyes fixed on him with her vaguely knowing smile. He could not disguise his surprise when she lit a cigarette, but she misconstrued the cause and said hastily, "No, I didn't take yours. I always carry my own cigarettes, no need to worry about that."

She had finished the room, evidently, but made no move
